Als wir 2018 unseren Verein gründeten, folgten wir einem ambitionierten Plan. Damals besuchten zwei unserer Kolleginnen gemeinsam mit einer Gruppe junger Auszubildender aus Moers eine Bildungseinrichtung in Addis Abeba, der Hauptstadt von Äthiopien. Junge Erwachsene mit Lernbeeinträchtigungen und körperlichen Behinderungen erhielten dort eine gute Perspektive für die berufliche Aus- und Weiterbildung. Nach dem zweiten Besuch entstand aus dem gemeinsamen Lernen und Arbeiten mit den Gastgebern ein mutiges Projekt – ein Modell zur beruflichen Entwicklung. Wir wollten vor Ort Wege finden, um die Optikerausbildung zu testen und zu etablieren. Hintergrund war ein dort weit verbreitetes Virus, welches über Trinkwasser aus den Brunnen zur Erblindung Tausender von jungen Menschen führte. Fleißig sammelten wir in einem Umkreis von 100 Kilometern Materialspenden von deutschen Optikerbetrieben und führten alsbald konkrete Gespräche mit Institutionen wie der Auslandshandelskammer, Stiftungen und Organisationen der Entwicklungshilfe.

Neuro Kids Warriors in Kenia
When we founded our association in 2018, we followed an ambitious plan. Back then, two of our colleagues visited an educational institution in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, together with a group of young trainees from Moers. Young adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities were given good prospects for vocational education and training there. After the second visit, learning and working together with the hosts resulted in a bold project – a model for professional development. We wanted to find ways to test and establish optician training locally. The background to this was a widespread virus that was causing thousands of young people to go blind through drinking water from the wells. We diligently collected donations of materials from German opticians within a radius of 100 kilometres and soon held concrete discussions with institutions such as the Chamber of Commerce Abroad, foundations and development aid organisations.
But on the way to the project, there were suddenly huge obstacles in front of us that were to thwart our plans… the cruel war in Ethiopia and the coronavirus pandemic in 2019 put a spanner in the works and unfortunately cancelled our idea. Due to the travel bans and political restrictions, further engagement was no longer possible. From then on, our association members focussed their attention more on other vocational training activities.
The topic of neurodiversity has accompanied us for many years through our vocational training programmes for young people with rehabilitation status and from the autism spectrum (in&aut state model project, rehabilitation training/vocational preparation) as well as through our cooperation with many special schools. Since summer 2024, Mobe e.V. has maintained an exchange with Neuro Kids Warriors, a civilian self-help organisation from Nairobi, Kenya. The community based organisation primarily supports children who were born with Spina bifida and Hydrocephallus. Necessary operations, transfers, counselling and social support are urgently needed there. The families affected do not have the financial means or knowledge to deal with these forms of disability. Even though Kenya is economically successful, most families live in poverty and very precarious living conditions. We were able to see this for ourselves during a visit in October.
